Margaret Hamilton, the pioneering computer scientist who led the development of software for NASA’s Apollo mission, has died aged 90.
Her work helped support the landing of Apollo 11 on the Moon, making her a significant figure in the history of space exploration and computer science.
Hamilton was responsible for leading the software development effort connected with the Apollo programme. The systems created under her leadership played a role in the mission that enabled Apollo 11 to reach and land on the lunar surface.
Her contribution was later recognised with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Hamilton’s death marks the loss of one of the figures associated with the development of the software that supported one of the most significant achievements in space exploration.
