Northampton began their title defence with a convincing 59-26 victory over Newcastle, with James Pater and Tommy Freeman both scoring hat-tricks.
The result gives Northampton an emphatic opening win as they start their campaign following their previous title success. Newcastle managed 26 points, but Northampton’s attacking performance produced a 33-point margin of victory.
Pater and Freeman were the standout contributors, each crossing three times during the match. Their combined six tries formed a major part of Northampton’s total and helped the holders establish control of the contest.
Northampton will now look to build on the result as their title defence continues, while Newcastle must respond after conceding 59 points in their opening fixture.
