Millions of people across the UK and Europe witnessed a rare solar eclipse, with the Moon passing in front of the Sun and creating striking scenes across parts of the continent.
In Cornwall, more than 95% of the Sun was obscured at the height of the event, making it one of the most dramatic views of the eclipse in the UK. The partial eclipse offered viewers there an unusually deep solar covering, while other areas across Britain and Europe also experienced the phenomenon to varying degrees.
Parts of Spain saw the most complete form of the event, with a total eclipse visible in some areas. A total eclipse occurs when the Moon fully blocks the Sun from view along the path where the alignment is exact.
The eclipse was described as a once-in-a-generation event, reflecting its rarity and the scale of public interest across the region. For many observers, it provided a chance to see a major astronomical alignment without travelling beyond Europe.
The most intense reported conditions were in Cornwall, where the Sun was almost entirely covered, and in parts of Spain, where totality was experienced. The event drew attention across multiple countries as millions looked skywards to watch the Moon move across the face of the Sun.
